How the polynesian wayfinders navigate the pacific ocean

How the polynesian wayfinders navigate the pacific ocean

How did the polynesians navigate without modern day technology? Polynesian wayfinders navigated with Stars (north star and the southern cross) a large amount of clouds to find mountainous islands or some clouds to reflect lagoons, flight patterns of birds, debris, fish, and vegetation.

The navigators used stars to find north and south. The north star was a permanent star that could be seen at night. The southern cross was also a permanent cluster of stars that was close to the direction of the south.

The navigators used clouds to find mountainous islands. If there is a large amount of clouds in that area, it is often above a mountainous island. To find lagoons. lagoons reflect off the underside of some clouds.

The navigators used birds to find islands since birds can’t go that far away from land so you can use their flight patterns to find islands. They also used fish and what type of fish they were. Debris and vegetation also helped them navigate to islands.

In conclusion the polynesians used the north star and the southern cross to find south and north. They also use clouds to find islands. Lastly they used birds to find landmasses. In 2017 a voyage using these techniques successfully sailed across the world. Do you think you could do that?

Navigation

 Aim:

I want to walk in a straight line with no senses.

Hypothesis:

I predict that I will walk in a straight line,

Method:

Equipment:

  • Bucket
  • Blindfold
  • Cotton wool

Instructions:

  1. Using the blindfold cover your eyes
  2. Put cotton wool in your ears
  3. Put the bucket on your head
  4. Spin in a circle 3 times
  5. Get your partner to line you up in the right direction
  6. Begin walking in a straight line

Safety

  • Stop walking when you hear the whistle
  • If your partner says stop you must stop
Do not walk into objects or people

Results: Over 300 metres he curved to the left slightly because his right leg was slightly longer
Conclusion: It is impossible to walk in a straight line
Discussion:

  • Words to do with direction
  • Left/right
  • Straight/curve/zigzag
  • Backwards/forwards
  • Diagonal
  • Up/down
  • north/east/south/west
  • North east

Critical Questions

For hurumanu we had to answer questions and here the questions are:

Why are we reading these stories? We are reading these stories to improve our reading skills
How would these stories be different if they were set in a different time place or culture? The culture part would be alot different because mauri are a lot different to other cultures. If it was in a different place they wouldn't be able to make all the stuff they made in New Zealand. If it was in a different time ex. Now it would be boring because now we have all of these responsibilities like school or work.
